A large mechanical plotter carefully draws onto sand with a high degree of precision, as though powered by an accurate and never-fatigued hand. Each image features countless details in fine lines. After it finishes, the machine systematically erases the surface, returning it to a blank canvas, and proceeds to sketch an entirely new scene.
Future Fossils are imagined fossils brought to life by this cyclical process of creation and erasure. Unlike the enduring relics of geological time, these new “fossils” hold only a momentary imprint: once the plotter completes them, they remain for a brief period before being swept away to make room for more transient visuals. Through this ongoing cycle, Future Fossils observes ephemerality, exploring how memory can emerge and vanish in the span of a single mechanical sweep.
Alongside Sand Printer, Segal continues her exploration of drawing and painting machines in pieces like Random Walk 2.0, This Is Not a Typewriter, Epicenter, and Heart for the Tin Man.
